Hi there -
So I received a call yesterday from a woman who believes she saw Rocky in her backyard on Tuesday morning at 9:30 am. Although this sighting was in Falls Church, it is about 2-3 miles from his previous sightings - however being that it's been a week since he was definitively seen, it is possible he moved that far out of the area. I still think he'll eventually circle back to the other areas, but we will likely focus some of our attention today and tomorrow in that area. The address of the sighting was 6110 Aura Court which is off of Route 7 (this new sighting is indicated on the sighting map). Rocky was heading towards a St. Anthony's Church apparently. No word if he took communion.
We will still meet tonight between 6 and 7 pm at the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. I have a lot of posters and will bring tape and other supplies. Please bring any extra flashlights, leashes, tape, staple guns, thumbtacks, or plastic sleeves you might have. If you are the searching type, you may want to bring cheese, deli meat, or something other yummy to dogs.
Tomorrow at noon we can meet at one of our volunteers house which is at the corner of N. Oak and Walnut closer to the West Falls Church metro. Sonia - I don't have your exact address so if you want to post it below that would be helpful.
We also could use some volunteers to help canvass the metro parking lots and pass out flyers at rush hour. Are there any high school or college students reading this blog that would be willing to help out for this? Contact me at rockydab@yahoo.com or text 703-593-1040 if interested. I can compensate you for your time.
Looking forward to seeing a lot of people out tonight and tomorrow. Hope is in the beautiful air right now - please help Rocky complete his journey home.

FYI, the Staples at West Falls Church Center now has the business cards sheet on file there for anyone that wants to go have some printed to hand out and put on windshields. Thanks to Shana & Natalia for having that done, as well as Alex at Staples.
ReplyDeletePlease please follow up on every sighting even if you don't think it could possibly be him. I have volunteered for many lost dogs and it amazes me how far they can travel. Get ahead of this most recent sighting and start posting there. You have to always be ahead of them to keep getting calls. Please don't wait for him to circle around because sometimes that never happens. Follow up on EVERY sighting.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, all sightings should be taken seriously. We do have several people out in the area postering now (Friday afternoon). I would be nervous about moving the entire operation to that area and leaving the area we've been working entirely, but if there are enough volunteers to go around, or if there's anyone close to that area anyway that would prefer to flier there, then that would be ideal.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone that does want to flier the area of the new sighting will contact me, and then keep me posted about what you cover after you call it quits, I can keep track of that and see if we feel like we've covered enough ground there. That location is approximately 4 miles from where most of the other sightings have been. 4 miles is easily covered by a dog with purpose, but I'm not sure that Rocky has purpose in his travels.
There's also a high volume of traffic for him to have used that direct Leesburg Pike route to get there, reducing the likelihood that he could traverse it without being either victimized by that traffic, or run off the beaten path by any number of people he'd have encountered. (Not that people would attempt to run him off, but he'd likely run in response to their attempts to help him.)
So, not having spoken with the person that called in the sighting, I can't qualify it, which means I'm only speculating here.

I would agree with the above post. Rocky is so distictive, I think it would be hard to mistake him for a different dog, especially in the daylight.
ReplyDeleteThere is always a purpose for a lost dog to travel and that is to find food. I just received a email about a lost dog who got loose and traveled 4 miles in 2 days. This dog also crossed busy streets. A man with his dog saw the dog hiding in the bushes and the dog came to him. Thank God the dog was microchipped and the owners were called. So please follow up on every sighting.
ReplyDeleteI have been following Rocky's Great Escape since the beginning and I hope you have a good night tonight. I say a little prayer for him Jeddah, who sent me here and all the other little lost fur babies. Keep the faith alive he will be home soon! He needs to hurry to catch the Superbowl!
ReplyDeleteFor Saturday's search, we will meet at 6804 Walnut St, the corner of Walnut and N. Oak.
ReplyDeleteI passed your blog along to my co worker who lives near the latest possible sighting. She was thinking he would probably be a rather large dog while I was thinking he was more of a 35-40 pound pooch. Rocky's dad, can you please mention his weight / height so that I can pass along the info? I'm not super familiar with how large his breed is, plus him being a mix, it's hard to tell
ReplyDeleteKeeping my eyes and ears open...
In our town all of our local radio stations broadcast lost dogs over the radio whenever you call them in. Call all stations in your area. Most people are listening to the radio if they are out and about. I am sure you have already done this, but just incase you haven't, it's a great way to keep eyes open. Call morning noon and night daily and get everyone's attention. Make sure you mention not to chase but to call you immediately if spotted.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous about the radio stations--great idea! Are you able to research DC-area radio stations and reach out for us? Please let us know.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Daphne
Sorry, but I live in Alpena, MI and would have no way of finding out your local stations. It wouldn't take much time for someone in your area to call the local stations though. It works great!! I know quite a few times I was driving and seen a dog that was just on the radio. Our stations usually keep the phone number handy for a while incase someone call in forgetting the number they heard on the radio. On our stations they call it Pet Patrol and they air lost and found dogs. I pray you find Rocky soon.
ReplyDeleteActually--contacting radio stations in the Washington, DC listening area is a great task for anyone to tackle from a distance! Here is a link to a list of all the area stations--we just need someone to reach out to them with phone calls!

If anyone is able to tackle this, please let us know!
Thanks!

I asked Ravi about this at today's meeting. He said that he already has people working on contacting radio stations.
