Jan 17 Update

No new sightings and nothing new from the shelters, animal control, vets, or DOT today. Which is good news and bad news depending of course. Seems like a lot of people were out trying to get some eyes on Rocky - thanks to everyone for doing that. I'll be out at some point tonight again in the area. If you want/need posters or business cards, just call me and I can arrange to meet you somewhere to pick them up.

Yesterday was supposed to be the coldest day - so if Rocky made it through that one (as I'm sure he did), he should be good to make it through until we find him. It's possible he took warm shelter for the duration yesterday and didn't make it out at all.

We will be setting up a third feeding station today near Tuckahoe park (thanks to Debbie for finding us space). Please look at the list below and contact me if you can help with any of those items. Thanks again,
Rocky's Dad

  1. Hi, I just got back from walking my dogs in the neighborhood near West Falls Church metro. Unfortunatly we did not see Rocky, but we saw plently of Rocky signs and quite a few other folks out walking, walking their dogs, and even running. I also saw MANY places where he could hunker down and take shelter. Like many folks in the area I'm off work until Wednesday and have dogs that need to be walked so point us where you want help.

  2. Has anyone been able to get a trap? I have one for a cat, but that would be too small... :-(

  3. Max, Chloe, (my 2 mini poodles) & me are walking the area. We didn't see any signs of Rocky today, but we did see signs about Rocky! Can you provide the exact location where Rocky went missing, along with the exact location that Rocky is heading back to? My experience is that lost pets return to where they were lost and migrate toward where they live. I'd like to start looking where he got loose and move toward where he lives.

I'm trying to help this poor guy because it's really cold out there.

    Thanks!

  4. Hank, there is a sightings map located in the links on the bottom right: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114974815979925284183.00045fd8e936d2b5e374b&ll=38.883684,-77.127113&spn=0.07924,0.181961&z=13

  5. We have traps--but they aren't rigged to spring yet because we do not yet have a feeding station pattern set. We need to know where Rocky is and when in order to have a shot with the trap. Once we get traps out, we'll need folks to help monitor them every few hours. If you're able to do so, please let us know!

    Thanks!

  6. I would guess that people would have to monitor the traps more often than every few hours. We trapped a colony of cats to get them fixed and the animal is REALLY unhappy once trapped!

  7. Not to mention that Rocky would be exposed to the elements in a trap. It's very cold out there...

  8. The best plan does include having a good number of trap monitoriing volunteers ready to split the load -- when the time comes for the trap. Until Rocky picks one of the feeding stations and we know he's using it, that's when we set the trap up, and discontinue the other feeding stations. So, we don't know when it will happen, but when it does, the more people ready to take shifts checking the trap, the less time any one person is asked to commit.

I think we still need one more heated water bowl (or bird bath) for the last feeding station, if I'm not mistaken.

  9. I just spent about 3 hrs driving walking all over westmoreland, tuckahoe, lee hwy, metros, etc. noting at all. i did see a pair of eyes shining back at me from some woods, but i think it ended up being a cat because i saw one on the when i was on my way out of the woods.

this spot looked promising for a dog to hide in though. it backs right up to 66 (if rocky tries to stay close to 66), has secluded woods and also has several old sheds, etc. that are falling apart, but that a dog could shelter in. it's right on the corner of meridian and hallwood (off westmoreland and then off gordon). it looks like private property, so maybe knock on one of the doors for permission to place a feeding station or trap.

I'll keep checking the blogs to see if there will be another organized search.
